Hair Restoration
Thinning hair and baldness affect the majority of men at some point in their lives. For some men, the thought of hair restoration conjures up images of painful hair-plugs or mysterious cream treatments. However, the truth is that today there are a wide variety of hair restoration options, from homeopathic remedies and natural supplements to laser treatment, prescription medicine and hair transplants.
Hair restoration options can be placed in four broad categories: surgical, medicinal, and topical.
Surgical Hair Restoration
Hair transplantation is the most aggressive form of hair restoration. And when conducted properly, it can be the most effective. Hair growth is restored by taking hair follicles from parts of the scalp where hair still grows and relocating them to areas that have become bald or where the hair is thin. The cost for hair restoration surgery varies, but it is typically between $10,000 and $25,000. Please see our hair transplant page for more information.Medicinal Hair Restoration
Many men choose Propecia and other oral medicines as their choice for hair restoration. The purpose of these medicines is the block the hormone dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, which shrinks hair follicles and leads to baldness or thinning hair.Topical Hair Restoration
Minoxidil is the most well know topical hair restoration option. In this method, the medicine is placed directly on the scalp, typically in the form of a cream or shampoo. Much like oral medications, this hair restoration method seeks to block the hormone DHT that leads to male pattern baldness.
